Biografie
Jeho profesionální herecký debut byl v roce 1929 v Televizním divadle Maryland Theatre v Baltimoru, Mayland. On dělal jeho Broadway herecké debut v roce 1932 v Muži musí bojovat. On také objevil na Broadwayi v Measure for Measure, Love Remembered, The Best Man, Ah, Wilderness!, Dodsworth, Saint Joan, Old Acquaintance, Antony a Cleopatra a Bus Stop. Smith se přestěhoval do Hollywoodu, Kalifornie, kde se objevil ve svém filmu The Garden Case. Objevil se v mnoha filmech, jako jsou Henry Fonda, James Stewart, Joshua Logan a Margaret Sullavan v Falmouth, Massachusetts.
