Biografie

Edwin Stanton Porter byl americký filmový průkopník, nejznámější jako producent, režisér, studiový manažer a kameraman v Edison Manufacturing Company a Famous Players Film Company. Přestože jeho význam jako režiséra filmu The Great Train Robbery (1903) a dalších filmů Georges Méliès je nepopiratelně inovativní, pokračoval ve vytváření důležitých krátkých filmů jako Life of an American Fireman (1903). V nich pomohl rozvíjet moderní koncept kontinuitního editace a vydláždil cestu pro D.W. Griffith, který by rozšířil Porterův objev, že jednotkou filmové struktury byl záběr než scéna. Porter, ve snaze odolat novému průmyslovému systému zrozenému z popularity nickelodeonů Storm, opustil Edison v roce 1909 a založil vlastní produkční společnost, kterou nakonec prodal v roce 1912.
