Po svém debutu v roce 1978 ve filmu "Stony Island", Chongův průlom přišel v roce 1981 s "Quest for Fire", který jí získal prestižní Genie Award za nejlepší herečku. V průběhu 80. let se jí dařilo různorodé role ve filmech jako "Beat Street", "The Colorple", "Commando" a "Soul Man", které ukazovaly její rozmanitost napříč komediemi, dramaty a thrillery.
