Burmeister vyrůstala v Bellingen na středním severním pobřeží Nového Jižního Walesu. Vzdělávala se na Mosman High School v Sydney a trénovala v Australském divadle pro mladé lidi. Během střední školy hrála v různých divadelních inscenacích, včetně Blackrock, The Merchant of Venice a Chapel Perilous.
